An interdisciplinary centre advancing research and action on how information and emerging technologies shape, and are shaped by, people, institutions and society.
The Srilatha and Prabhakar Raghavan Centre for Information and Society at IIT Madras studies how information and emerging technologies shape people, institutions and society, and translates that understanding into solutions for public benefit.
Our work spans artificial intelligence, digital platforms, information systems, education, work, health and wellbeing, inclusion, culture, public institutions, opportunity and democracy. We examine not only how technology affects society, but also how social realities, institutions and human behaviour should shape the technologies we build.
Through interdisciplinary research, grants, fellowships, teaching, student programmes, convenings and partnerships, CISOC seeks to produce rigorous evidence and meaningful outcomes: tools, datasets, prototypes, frameworks, policy insights and real-world interventions.
This centre seeks to be the premier centre for understanding and thought leadership on the impact of information on society, through research, teaching and solutions for societal development.
Our approach is rooted in understanding how information, emerging technologies and society shape one another. We recognise that technology will continue to advance, and we focus on what can be achieved through thoughtful, critically informed research and action.
